Mechanical Ski-Boy with Original Key (Nice One) Click images to enlarge Description About this Listing: We are pleased to offer this Vintage No. 157 MECHANICAL SKI-BOY Tin-Lithograph Windup toy, Made by J. CHEIN & Co. Circa 1940’s. The condition of this whimsical windup toy is impressive, and it works perfectly. The key wind motor is strong. Just wind him up and his arms raise up and down with his ski-poles in hand. He moves forward very quickly and makes a slight turn as he is propelled along by the metal wheel(s) underneath. J. CHEIN produced these in two versions that we are aware of. One version having a seperate key as this one does, and a different version with a fixed (permanent) key. CONDITION/FUNCTION: Complete and Original Has Original Metal Windup Key Colorful Graphics Windup Motor in strong working condition Ski-Poles intact Minor Paint Scratching/chipping to paint (as pictured) FUN FACTS: J. Chein & Co. History: J. Chein (Julius Chein) is known to have lost an arm during a fireworks accident, founded the J. Chein & Company in a loft in New York City in the year 1903. One of the first products produced by the company were a line of Cracker Jack’s premiums. Chein’s tin lithography was done by the American Can Company until the year 1907 at which time Chein built their own lothograph printing plant in Harrison, New Jersey. The new line of products produced by Chein included novelty coin banks, noisemakers and model horse-drawn carriges. During World War I, companies could no longer import toys from Germany. Chein seized the opportunity and began supplying F.W. Woolworth’s with his merchandise. Chein also secured a number of licenses from companies such as Walt Disney Production and King Features Syndicates, and Julius Chein served as the principal designer for the firm. After the War, in the 1920’s and into the early 1930’s, Chein introduced a line of toy trucks under the “Hercules” brand name. The line also included other wheeled vehicles as well as toy boats. Their line of crawling, jumping and walking toys were however the mainstays of their product lines. In the year 1926, Julius Chein was killed while riding his horse in New York’s Central Park. His widow turned over the management responsiblities to her brother, Samuel Hoffman who also was the owner of the Mohawk Toy Company, which was a Chein rival. Hoffman disolved the Mohawk Toy Company when he became manager of Chein. It is Hoffman who is credited with the creation of ever increasing complex toys such as the J. Chein Ferris Wheels. World War II forced Chein to suspend toy production and they produced nosecones and tail units for bombs, and casings for incendiary devices. The company resumed toy production when the war ended. By the end of 1940’s, Chein began experiencing heavy competition from Japanese imports, the rusults of the U.S. Governement’s influence in rebuilding the Japanese economy. Chein moved to a new factory in Burlington, New Jersey with the strategy of increasing their competitiveness. At it’s peak of production at the new facility, more than 600 individuals worked and supported their families from there. At this point, F.W. Woolworth was the companies principal retailer, and when Woolworth began experiencing financial difficulties in late 1950’s and early 1960’s they decided to turn to less expensive plastic toys. Hoffman retired from Chein in the mid-1960’s and Chein’s management came to the conclusion that it was cost-prohibitive to retool their machinery to produce plastic toys. The toy line was slowly discontinued and the last toys associated with the J. Chein & Co. name was produced in 1979. J. Chein & Co. acquired the Learning Arts Group along with its Renwal Plastics division. During this time in the company history, Renwal introduced the anatomical line kits known as the Visible Man, Visible Woman, etc. In the late 1960’s Chein received a “Peanuts” licensing agreement and they made “Peanuts” toys through the early 1970’s. Chein sold the Renwal division in the mid-1970’s and turned their focus to manufacturing household products such as canister sets and wastebaskets. They also produced licensed metal containers for Heinz, Maxwell House and Sunkist. The Atlantic Can Company purchased “Cheinco” in the late 1980’s, thus creating Atlantic Cheinco Corporation. Manufacturing problems and environmental problems forced Atlantic Cheinco to file for bankruptcy in 1992. Ellisco of Pennsylvania, a division of CSS Industries bought Atlantic Cheinco’s assets.
