Vintage French Provence Feves, Miniature Creche, Santons, Nativity Figurines, 16 pcs This sixteen piece set of “fèves” in painted faïence is made up of the Holy Family, the Wise Men, a donkey, an ox and eight traditional Provencal creche characters including the drummer (tambourinaïre), the peasant, the flower seller and the shepherds. The tradition of fèves (“broadbeans” in French), or miniature santons, is linked to the tradition of the “Galette des Rois” (the King’s cake), and traditionally eaten on Epiphany, the 6th of January. Epiphany is the day which celebrates the arrival of the three Kings (Wise Men or Magi) at the manger in Bethlehem. The person who receives the “fève” in their piece of the “galette”, is king for the day and gets to wear a paper crown which is sold with the galette at the bakery. Originally these little figurines were always religious and the ultimate aim was to collect a whole Nativity scene including the villagers, over the years completing the set and handing it down from generation to generation, just like with the larger Nativity scenes. Today children in France still collect fèves. These fèves are in very good condition with the exception of signs of wear due to age and use.
