Given this and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.*********** This seldom seen vintage 1960’s Wakmann Nautoscaph has a uniquely aged “SWISS MADE” signed dial that presents beautifully. In my humble opinion it’s truly special and presents markedly better in person. Please note that while the dial shows that this watch is certified to 999 feet the case back is stamped 1650 feet/50 ATM. This was not uncommon to see during this era. The lume on the dial and hands, which no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The stealth bezel, which shows wear and has lost its original enamel paint, rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with minor signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “STAINLESS STEEL SWISS MADE WATERRESISTANT 100% TESTED ANTIMAGNETIC AUTOMATIC” with “1650 FT” and “50 ATM” stamped along the inner edge and “NAUTOSCAPH” stamped in the center. The crystal shows scratching. While I normally show pictures of the movements of watches I put up for sale the case back on this particular watch is torqued too tight for me to remove. Based on several similar examples I’ve owned the movement is likely an ETA 2452 automatic movement with semi-quickset date function. The movement runs strong, keeps accurate time and the date wheel rolls over at 12 am. The semi-quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 21 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. After recently winding the sharply threaded crown 39 full revolutions the movement had an approximate 45 hour power reserve period. Although the crown pulls out, pushes back in and winds buttery smooth it does not screw down. Given this and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended. This watch measures approximately 36 mm excluding the crown, approximately 41 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 10 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 13 mm. This watch comes on a fully pliable, period correct 19 mm Tropic strap that is free of any cracks/rips with the signature “INOX” flared buckle showing signs of oxidation. The long end measures approximately 122 mm with the short end, excluding the buckle, measuring approximately 84 mm. A complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.
