I am a collector and purchased this fine porcelain at a state auction and have owned it for a very long time. **Please keep in mind that this fine porcelain piece is one of the few ORIGINAL FIRST PRODUCTION RUN. This is not a copy like the rest that are auctioned here or elsewhere.** Check the color, details, and the stamps under the base of this porcelain. The colors and finishes of this piece are extremely natural and not dark and fake looking like the copies. The attention to details on this piece is simply amazing. The Elephant mother and calf are extremely realisitc and the quality of this piece is magnificent. Check the colors, the details of the hide, the intricate details of the eyes, ears, trunk, and the grass that Elephants are walking on. The overall quality, porporations, and scale are amazing. Check the manner is which the Elephant mother uses her trunk to bring the calf along and also portect it. About Lenox Porcelain: The line of fine American china known as Lenox was founded by an innovative man by the same name, Walter Scott Lenox, in 1899. Beginning in 1875, Lenox worked as a decorator and designer for several pottery manufactures in Trenton, NJ. Several years later he became the design director for Ott & Brewer, producing a domestic version of Irish Belleek. The struggling firm eventually failed, and soon thereafter Walter Scott Lenox founded his own factory.According to company notes, the initial Lenox factory was organized more as an art studio than a factory. Rather than offering a complete line of ceramics, Lenox offered one-of-a-kind pieces produced from lustrous ivory. Working initially with only 18 employees, Lenox china quickly became known among the most exclusive shops in England. By 1897, some pieces of Lenox porcelain were being displayed in the Smithsonian Institute. In 1902, Lenox began producing his own fine pieces and china dinnerware, which enjoyed great success despite incredible competition from European manufacturers. In 1906, Lenox Incorporated began producing customized place settings, a tradition that continues with the company to this day. Lenox porcelain products were widely recognized for their stylistic excellence. This honor is largely attributed to the work of Frank Graham Holmes, chief designer of Lenox Incorporated from 1905 to 1954. His work earned him a number of prestigious awards, including the Craftsmanship Medal of the American Institute of Architects (1927) and the silver medal of the American Designers Institute (1943). These pieces were among the 34 Lenox pieces chosen for display in 1928 by the elite National Museum of Ceramics in Sévres, France. Lenox china was the first and only American porcelain ever extended this honor. Lenox china dinnerware has been presented in the White House, alongside another famous American manufacturer “Haviland.” Lenox was the first North American bone china to be used in the White House, and the company has since made tableware for six U.S. presidents. They are officially titled: The Wilson Service: Designed by Frank Holmes. Delivered to the White House between August and November 1918. The pattern is a deep ivory border surrounding a brighter ivory body and two bands of matte gold encrusted with stars, stripes and other motifs. This first set of American made tableware of 1,700 pieces from Lenox cost $16,000.[3]The Roosevelt Service: Ordered October 1934. It is described as patriotic, bearing a border of 48 gold stars, and the presidential seal in enamel colors on an ivory body.The Truman Service: Consisting of 1,572 pieces, the pattern includes a border of celadon green flanked by an etched gold band and a 24 karat gold rim on an ivory body. Delivered in early 1952.The Reagan Service: The pattern are bands of scarlet varying in width depending on the scale of the piece and are framed on each side with etched gold. The presidential seal, in raised gold, partially overlays the red border.The Clinton Service: The pattern features a border of pale creamy yellow, and images of the White House facades. Each piece in the place setting is decorated with a different pattern, the motifs derived from architectural elements found in the State Dining Room, East Room, and Diplomatic Reception Room. No presidential seal appears.[8]The Bush Service: Laura Bush first displayed this newest service on January 7, 2009. The porcelain place setting service features a green basket weave border based on a French dinner service believed to have been owned by James and Dolley Madison. The dessert plates replicate a laurel wreath found on Madison’s Parisian c. 1799-1805 dinner plates. The serving plates and the rim of other pieces also feature an eagle emblem inspired by an American bald eagle inlay found on the center drawer of the Massachusetts sideboard, believed to have been owned by Daniel Webster. Lenox tableware is at the vice president’s official residence, more than 300 United States embassies, and more than half of the governors’ mansions. Dignitaries of the United States Congress and Department of State have received Lenox giftware.[1] The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institution have Lenox pottery as centerpieces in exhibitions of American decorative arts. The Lenox backstamp is on about half of all fine porcelain dinnerware purchased since the 1950s in America. Beside collectibles, Lenox also produces tableware, serving pieces, vases, and Department 56 items.[9]
