The Nintendo NES being a 80’s console, most of its capacitors are at the end of their life. It’s therefore important to replace them so that all the components of the system are properly powered. This kit contains all the necessary capacitors to restore your console and is compatible with all models of daughterboards (Power & Modulator) of the North American NES. This kit allows you to refurbish your console and solve the following problems: – Screen = display problems or no image. – Sound = sizzling sound or no sound.- Console not turning on = power supply problem (Fuse or Power Regulator problems). Except for rare failures (CPU, PPU etc…) it will allow you to restart the vast majority of consoles that no longer work. TUTORIAL Here is a precise schematic of the NES-001 motherboard to help you replace the capacitors: C1 : 100uF X 6.3VC9 : 2.2uF X 50VC23 : 1uF X 50V A FEW TIPS FOR DESOLDERING THE POWER BOARD When removing the power module, your first instinct may be to desolder all of the connections on the bottom-side of the NES PCB and withdraw the module, signal pins and all. The problem with removing the 5 pins along with the modulator is that the PCB traces leading to the pins are only present on the top-side of the NES PCB. Since these pins can be challenging to properly desolder, you may end up removing or dislodging one of the vias. If that happens you may be missing a signal or two upon reinstallation. Our solution is to remove the top shield on the power module and desolder the 5 pins on the power PCB instead of the NES PCB. Then desolder the ground tabs. The benefits are: – This leaves the signal pin connection to the NES PCB undisturbed- The signal pin soldering to the NES PCB can be inspected and/or reworked- Signal pin traces on the Power PCB are accessible topside. This makes accidentally pulling out a via a non-issue. THE DIFFERENT POWER BOARD MODELS Here are the schematics for different Power Boards. If the Power Board model of your console isn’t included in this tutorial, don’t hesitate to take a photo before replacing the capacitors, and install the capacitors one by one, respecting the polarity.
