This extra-large black eastern coyote pelt measures 62 inches long from end to end and looks remarkably like a black wolf. This pelt was tanned in the early to mid-2010s and was originally intended for a full-body taxidermy mount so it includes all fine details including turned ears with a lifelike pointed shape as well as intact nose, claws, and paw pads. One of the front legs was badly damaged at the tannery, so we’ve replaced the damaged leg with the closest match we could find from another pelt. There is a small rub on the lower back near the rump (likely caused when this animal ducked under a fence) that really isn’t noticeable unless you look closely or feel for it. Otherwise, this pelt is in fantastic condition for a not-quite-vintage pelt. It should stand up well to display or gentle handling. If you intend to use it for costuming or educational purposes, we recommend reinforcing the back/leather side with another material to help prevent tears. The eastern coyote, also known as the coywolf, is a wild North American canine hybrid with both coyote and wolf parentage. The hybridization likely first occurred in the Great Lakes region, as western coyotes moved east. It was first noticed during the early 1930s to the late 1940s, and likely originated in the aftermath of the extirpation of the gray wolf and eastern wolf in southeastern Ontario, Labrador and Quebec, thus allowing coyotes to colonize the former wolf ranges, and mix with the remnant wolf populations. This hybrid is smaller than the eastern wolf and holds smaller territories, but is significantly larger than the typical western coyote. This hide will be carefully folded and shipped in a hard-sided box to protect it. Pelts that have been shipped may have wrinkles or flattened hairs, but all you’ll need to do to restore it is hang it up for a few days so the pelt can relax back into its natural shape.
