I start with an Eberline ASP-1, which is a digital survey meter comparable to the Ludlum 3. It is very rugged and configurable for many different probes and measurement units. I refurbish it as follows:Calibrate it for counts per minute and test it with an Eberline Mini Pulser MP-2 over all the rangesCheck the sensitivity to verify 15mVSpray contact cleaner on all the switches and test them for reliable operationLift and reseat all the integrated circuits to clean the wipers in the socketsAdjust the high voltage to 675V to match the Scionix 38B57 probeAdjust the dial on the range switch for x10M to x100 (x1K is the lowest setting on some meters – let me know if this is important to you) I then add the γLine (gammaLine) technology to turn it into a high performance radioactive rock finder with tones:Add 3D printed components to hold the probe, cover the sensitive switches, and keep the meter off the groundAdd a Scionix 38B57 probe, which is a lightweight but sensitive scintillation probe ideal for detecting hot rocks in the field a foot or more away Add a printed circuit board with a microprocessor that converts the random signals of the probe into pleasant tones that make it easy to find and localize hot rocks – various modes and squelch settings are achieved with motion detection Here is a video that demonstrates this instrument along with its big brother, the γDog: https://youtu.be/II96ItQKe1kHere is another video that explains more about the tones: https://youtu.be/GEEWO2B00bs?si=9SifzheHQwz_sflf The instrument in the photo is not the actual meter you will receive but it is very similar, including cosmetic blemishes.
