ANTIQUE GAMBLER’S MATCH SAFE WITH TINY INLAID 3 DICE CAGE ANTIQUE GAMBLER’S MATCH SAFE WITH TINY INLAID 3 DICE CAGE This is an unusual & desirable Gamblers or Sporting Gent’s Antique 3 dice cage inlaid into the face of the pocket Match Safe that was made to carry matches. Almost all men of this period smoked, and this container held the wooden match sticks that could be struck on just about any surface to be lit. Obviously, these matches needed a secure metal container to carry them around. This specialty match safe was undoubtedly purchased at a retail establishment such as a jewelry store, dry goods store, or a tobacco shop; and was intended for a Sporting Gent who had the means to gamble. With these 3 small dice, the owner could spontaneously offer a challenge to any friend or acquaintance, any time, or any place, such as gambling for drinks at a saloon, bar room, gambling hall or sporting event. This specialty match holder is nickel plated, with a tiny spot of aging to the plating on the left front side. Overall, the surface is shiny with light surface scratches from pocket wear. The bottom has a small oval, 3-dimensional diagonal pattern raised corrugated match striker on the bottom edge. This piece has rounded corners on all 4 sides. About 2 1/8″ tall x 1 3/8″ wide x 1/2″ thick and is heavy for its size at 1.1 ounces or 31 grams. The top has a dovetail hinge at the side that is tight open (does not move side to side), and the interior spring closes the top properly. This style of match safe was favored by gamblers and sporting gents. The 13/16″ diameter brass rimmed dice cage is inlaid into the front and has a green felt background. The 3 tiny dice are about 1/8″ square, are handmade from natural material, and therefore slightly irregular: with hand applied ink for numeral markings. The dice roll inside the cage freely and the tooth like protrusions help spin the dice. The surface ink on the dice are in good condition with one die having naturally occurring dark color on the edges. Most of the glass tops of the dice cages are cloudy and dark. However, this piece is fairly clear with a patch of light haze from dirt inside the glass but is in untouched condition. I found one small shallow hard to notice dint to the right-side edge but can be seen when rotating in the light. Note: It is very difficult to photograph a shiny, curved, reflective object, and the images are much larger and exaggerate the details. This piece is in very good used condition overall. This would be perfect for any smoker, Match Safe, Vesta, Tobacco, Saloon collector, Bar room, Gambler, or Sporting gentleman’s display; and could still be used today.
