Embryos are much more forgiving of variable incubators, so they’re a great pick for first time hatchers and much more likely to cope with shipping. Adults are a fun assortment of mixed breeds, selected for hardiness, color, lower feed requirements , and foraging ability. I started with a feral breed from the Caribean; a lean, hardy bird with characteristics similar to their original wild cousins. They’ve even adapted to fly for short distances, much like a wild turkey. I took this breed and crossed with RIR to boost egg production. Offspring were crossed again with the rooster in the picture to throw color and variety. The results are a beautiful flock of hens that forage for all of their own food. Unlike my other domestic breeds, they’re “predator wise” and have the sense to dart for cover and stay under the trees. When they are cooped, they eat half the food as my red stars, and still maintain egg production. They are also great at hatching their own eggs but prefer nesting boxes on the ground. The hens above are now penned with a hedamora rooster to lean them back out. (A testament to the durability of the embryos; I had 30 red star eggs, 6 Bresse, and 6 of these variety eggs in the same incubator. It had a temperature drop halfway through hatching and a spike to 103.5 two days before hatch. Half of my variety eggs still hatched! None of my bresse and only one of 30 red stars made it, but true to their breeding, these chicks are survivors and a much safer bet on shipped eggs.) Especially not the still air Little Giant ones from tractor supply. Poorly regulated incubators can kill your whole batch or cause deformities . 2) Be ready when your eggs arrive! Embryos can start to develop if temperatures rise during shipping, so they should be immediately put in an incubator upon arrival. 3) Use vertical automatic egg turners for shipped eggs , not horizontal. 4) Always verify incubator temp with an accurate thermometer .
